You have various options for getting around:

Bus
 
You'll find numerous routes which will take you to the different parts of the city. We recommend you ask for information about the buses that serve the university campuses. In many cities there is also a night bus service (these are sometimes known as "búhos", or "night owls"). Although they tend to come less frequently, they are very useful if you are intending to go out at night.

Underground
 
This is the perfect option if you want to avoid above-ground traffic, and there are metro systems in place in several Spanish cities. This is usually the fastest means of transport for getting from A to B. Check the opening times in each city (as the stations close for a few hours every night). What's more, if you're a keen reader, remember that some of the underground stations in networks like the one in Madrid offer a book-borrowing service to make your journey even more enjoyable.

Train
 
You can either take what is known as the "Cercanías" or suburban commuter railway network for short journeys), or the medium- and long-distance trains if you are planning to explore other parts of the country and want to travel reasonably fast. In fact many Spanish cities are linked by high-speed trains (AVE).

Taxi
 
Puedes coger un taxi en el momento (todos tienen tarifas oficiales y pueden cobrarte suplementos por maletas, destino... There are transport hubs which connect the underground, train and bus systems in one terminal.

You’ll find it very useful to pick up some free maps of each transport system (ask for one in the stations or bus termini).

If you plan to spend much time in Spain, ask about the ten-ticket transport passes or season tickets (for young people, etc.) to ensure you get the cheapest price for each ticket.
